“I loved this course. The content was thorough, useful, practical and with multiple excellent photos to clarify. It was well organized, well presented, and was presented by Steven Biggs who has an unbridled enthusiasm and positive energy on all things FIGS. There was lots of opportunity to ask questions at any moment in the course. Today, the day after the course, I have unpacked my two figs, buried under the snow, and, finding them alive and well, have brought them into our lean-to greenhouse for an early growing season (March 20) with 4 cm of snow expected otherwise outside today. The course offers a huge amount of great growing advice and then offers even more in terms of online references, watering techniques and further fig related internet sites. A friend of my wife's told her yesterday that you could never get a fig to grow to ripeness in Ottawa. I have every intention to prove her wrong and to add to my little fig collection when the temperature allows. Wonderful course. Cannot recommend it highly enough if you are even thinking of growing figs. Even if you are not, I'll bet you change your mind and are hooked! Did I say that I loved this course? Go for it. Thank you Steven”

“It's often said that there are more ways than one to do something. In this 2-day "camp" Donna and Steve continually gave us multiple ways to look at issues in the garden, meet a challenge and/or accomplish a goal. Their professional training as well as their vast hands-on experience means that the courses they offer are full of credible, science-based information as well as practical and creative ideas. If you like to learn in an enjoyable way, be inspired to try new ideas, and feel like you're being guided by your most loyal and favourite friends, I'd highly recommend this and other offerings by these wonderful people!”

“I really enjoyed the 2 night sessions and learned a ton. Both instructors were so knowledgeable and engaging and worked well together. I have neighbours and friends who have lemon trees and no one seems to get fruit so I didn't want to go into this blindly and go down the same path. I have to admit that as a parent, June is a very busy month with graduation planning, concerts, awards night...all post Covid...so I could only listen and take good mental notes and I appreciated this being an option Looking forward to following up in coming months with questions...as I believe this is possible in the online community. I was given a Meyer Lemon plant from a friend and I purchased a Lisbon one. Exciting times ahead! - Linda (Victoria, BC)”

“This course gave so many ideas on what is possible to grow in containers. Steve made container gardening look easy. He showed us how to make and water containers with materials we already have lying around the house. What I've always loved about Steve's classes is he gives a lot of examples. We are shown many ways we can grow things to suit our lifestyles and skillsets. I find it very inspiring. I can't wait for the snow to melt so I can place a bunch of self-watering pots (and a straw bale or two) on my driveway. ”

It was so enlightening to learn about how tomato varieties can be grouped according to particular properties and qualities, with good advice re: how to choose varieties appropriate to your gardening situation. Can hardly wait to order seeds and to participate in the Tomato Growing course.”

I'm Steven Biggs

Horticulturist, Author, Educator

I host these courses and events. My passion is food crops and edible landscapes. I’m a horticulturist, horticulture instructor, broadcaster and author. But what really makes me tick is my home garden.

Over the years, I’ve transformed my own backyard into a productive garden area, using container gardens, trellises, straw bales, and creative layouts to maximize every bit of space.

Garden Making Magazine recognized me as one of the “green gang” making a difference in horticulture. I do stuff like turn my front lawn into an edible landscape, create a rooftop kitchen garden, transform a driveway into a straw-bale vegetable garden—or collect 50 varieties of fig trees (where they’re not winter hardy!)

I’ve written for Mother Earth News, Fine Gardening, Garden Making, Country Guide, and other magazines. I’m the author of a bunch of gardening books. And I love teaching. Put me in front of a college class or garden club and I get a real kick out of framing ideas in a way that’s easy to understand.

There’s no big production company behind my courses. You can expect great content without industry jargon or the latest woo-woo trends from social media. I keep the live online events small because I treasure the connections that small groups foster.

Please don’t sign up for my courses if you want dry textbook stuff. I don’t always go by the book. But do sign up if you’d like to take food gardening outside the box. It’s fun. I promise.

FAQ

  • I’m a beginner. Are the courses at my level?

Yes. The courses are suited to beginners. They’re also a fit for gardeners who have some experience but want to take their growing up a notch.

  • How long do I have access to the online content?

You have unlimited access for 1 year.

  • How do the live programs work?

We meet on Zoom. It’s a meeting, not a webinar. That means that if you want, you can leave your camera on. I like doing it this way because it’s more personal. (But you can leave your camera off if you prefer.)

The Zoom link is in the online class area. You get access once you’ve registered. We also send out the link ahead of time.

  • I have questions about the courses. How do I find out more?

Just email me. Use the button above.

  • I need a certificate to use for continuing education credits. Can I get one?

Yes. You’ll automatically get a certificate when you complete a course.

  • What currency are your prices in?

    Canadian dollars.

(Which might make this even better value if you're outside of Canada! Even though many online businesses worldwide charge USD...I just don't like paying USD when shopping in Canada. That's why I charge C$.)

  • What if this isn't for me?

    There’s no risk.

If you feel a self-paced class isn’t for you, we’ll give you a full refund within 30 days of purchasing it. No questions asked.

If you decide a live program isn't for you after you attend the first gathering, we'll give you your money back. No questions asked.

Risk Free

We're committed to your success.

We’ll give you a full refund within 30 days of purchasing the course if you feel that it's not for you.

No questions asked.

“I bought a season ticket this year because I am a gardener that wonders if I am doing things right throughout the gardening process. This was the best decision I could have ever made.
