Hey there!

I'm Steven Biggs

I’m co-host of these events. I'm a horticulturist, award-winning broadcaster, and author. My articles have appeared in Mother Earth News, Fine Gardening, Garden Making, Country Guide, and other magazines. I was honoured to receive the 2022 Landscape Ontario Garden Communicator’s Award of Excellence.

I’m also an avid home gardener. Passionate about growing food. I’ve been teaching people to successfully grow food for the past two decades.

I ditched the exams when I taught college gardening courses. Instead, I got students to take what we discussed during the course and use the ideas to create their own garden plans.

Students told me this way of learning gardening was the single most helpful thing they had done.

Seeing my students plan their own gardens—gardens with plants and designs they love, and making choices to suit their growing conditions—inspired this mix of live talks and Q+A.

Hey there!

I'm Donna Balzer

I'm co-host of these events. I’m a home veggie gardening expert, horticulturist, award-winning TV host, former CBC Radio gardening expert, and former horticulture instructor with Olds College in Canada.

My passion is growing and cooking food and teaching others to do the same. I can’t wait to tell you about all of the edibles that I dot around my Calgary garden.

Steve and I love working together to help people grow food plants. Two gardeners, and two unique ways of doing things. That's why we wrote our best-selling book No Guff Vegetable Gardening together back in 2011.

I’d love it if you join us so I can share the crops and techniques I'm most excited about!

What Students Say

“It's amazing how much information was shared. Loved every minute of it and can't wait to put some of this into practice.”

“I'm sending some photos of my very first vegetable garden, inspired by you. I'm hooked!”

“Your class was a blast!”

FAQ

  • I already grow food. Is this for me?

We go beyond just growing crops. It’s also about the creative side of gardening…about designing a garden you love to be in. That touches your senses. That’s different from everyone else’s. We want you to reimagine your landscape.

  • What if I sign up and can't make one of the events?

The live events are recorded so that you can watch them afterwards.

  • How long is the season?

We meet once every month, year-round.

There are talks followed by Q+A October-May. Then, June-Sept., when we’re in the thick of gardening season, all of the time is for Q+A.

You can subscribe by the month, or get one of our 12-month Season Tickets packages.

  • How long are the events?

    2 hours, from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. ET.

  • How do I attend the online events?

    Zoom.

You can watch recordings of the live events afterwards. They’re in an online class area, which you get access to when you register.

  • What’s the format of the talks?

Donna and Steve take turns exploring the topic. The live online talks include lots of pictures to go with the ideas we talk about. They are structured, but informal. We like to take questions during and after the presentation.

  • Will I be able to ask questions?

Yes. We always have time for questions…the more the better!

  • Can I subscribe any time?

You can sign up for a recurring monthly subscription any time. And you can halt your subscription any time.

  • What currency are your prices in?

    Canadian dollars.

(Which might make this even better value if you're outside of Canada! Even though many online businesses worldwide charge USD...we just don't like paying USD when shopping in Canada. That's why we charge C$.)
