Camp Counsellor

Steven Biggs was recognized by Garden Making Magazine as one of the "green gang" making a difference in horticulture. His passion is incorporating edible crops into home gardens. His Toronto yard includes a driveway straw-bale garden, rooftop kitchen garden, wicking beds, fruit plantings ... and a lot of citrus plants. He works as a horticulturist, college instructor, broadcaster, and author.

He started sharing his passion for growing citrus in cold climates with his 2019 award-winning book Grow Lemons Where You Think You Can't.

Horticulturist, podcaster, and award-winning TV host Donna Balzer started with a degree in Agriculture and specialty in Horticulture, but is now focused on growing and cooking food and teaching others to do the same.

She loves getting her hands dirty. She has a greenhouse full of citrus, and grows fruit, nuts, and vegetables year-round in the Pacific Northwest.

    Day 1: Monday June 5, 2023.

    Day 2: Tuesday June 6, 2023.

    Each session is 2 hours long, in the evening.

  • How does virtual camp work?

    It's a mix of formal instruction about how to grow lemons in cold climates, along with questions and discussion about different situations and options.

  • How do I access the camp gatherings?

    Camp gatherings take place on Zoom. Once you enroll in the camp, you access the Zoom classes through the online camp platform.

  • What time are the camp gatherings?

    ET 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (e.g. Toronto, Buffalo)
    CT 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (e.g. Denver, Calgary)
    PT 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (e.g. Vancouver, Seattle)

  • Will I have a chance to ask my own questions?

    It's called "camp" because there's lots of time to ask questions. It not just an online lecture.

  • I already grow lemons. Is this for me?

    We go through and then beyond fig basics, with ideas and techniques that help you take your lemon growing to the next level.

  • What if this isn't for me?

    If you decide camp isn't for you after you attend the first gathering, we'll give you your money back. No questions asked.

  • I collect citrus and want to know about all the types and varieties. Is this course for me?

    This camp focuses on successfully growing lemons in cold climates. We cover a few other cold-suited citrus -- but the main focus is growing lemons successfully in cold climates.
