Angel’s Trumpet Patio Plant Class

18 June 2026

Learn how to grow brugmansia (angel’s trumpet) in a pot—even in cold climates. Get big, fragrant blooms, avoid common mistakes, and overwinter successfully.

This live, intimate, virtual class is hosted by horticulturist Steven Biggs.

7:00 - 9:00 p.m. ET

Brugmansia—better known as angel’s trumpet—is one of those plants that makes people stop mid-sentence.

  • Huge, dangling, trumpet-shaped flowers.
  • A scent that drifts across the yard in the evening.
  • A full-on tropical vibe… even in places that get winter.

And here’s the surprising part:
You don’t need a greenhouse, or a greenhouse budget.

You just need a pot, a plan, and a willingness to water more often than you think is reasonable.

What you’ll learn in this class

By the end of this class, you’ll know how to:

  • Grow brugmansia in containers—even in cold climates

  • Get big plants with armloads of blooms

  • Avoid the most common mistakes

  • Overwinter your plant without heartbreak

  • Prune and shape it into a patio showpiece

This is a practical, step-by-step class. No fluff. No tropical fantasy thinking.

Why grow brugmansia in a pot?

Because in our climate, you don’t really have a choice.

Brugmansia is a tender, tropical shrub that must be protected from frost. But you can use the pot to your advantage:

• You can move it to the best spot on your patio
• You can control soil, water, and feeding
• You can bring it indoors for winter

In other words, you’re in charge. And that’s how you get results.

What makes this plant special?

  • Flowers up to 30 cm (12 inches) long
  • Strong evening fragrance
  • Blooms from summer into fall
  • Fast-growing, dramatic, and just a bit ridiculous (in a good way)

It’s not subtle. That’s the point.

The things that make or break your success

If you remember nothing else from this course, remember this:

  • Water

This is a thirsty plant. In summer, container plants may need daily watering. Yes, daily. Sometimes more. (Or containers with reservoirs—and we’ll talk about that too.)

  • Feeding

Brugmansia is a heavy feeder. Regular fertilizer = bigger plants + more flowers.

  • Winter

You can make it go dormant. So you don’t need an elaborate greenhouse or grow lights.

An important note

Brugmansia is toxic if ingested

So heep it away from kids and pets

It’s a beautiful plant—not a snack.
